Protesters have stormed the presidential residence in Sri Lanka, which is facing an economic crisis.
According to the BBC, anti-government protesters in the capital, Colombo, entered the official residence of President Gotbaya Rajapaksa.
The BBC reports that President Rajapaksa fled to safety after the protesters entered. No information has been released about his whereabouts. Protests have been going on in Sri Lanka for a long time due to rising prices and shortage of essential commodities. Police had attacked the tear gas and a fountain of water to disject the protesters. Through the police elapid, 33 protesters have been injured.
They have been demanding the resignation of President Rajapaksa. People from different parts of the country have come to the capital Colombo to take part in the demonstration. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing dozens of protesters by truck. Sri Lanka has been going through an economic crisis for a long time. The shortage of petroleum products, drinking water and essential goods and medicines is increasing in the country.
